Study on the Rehabilitation and Improvement of the Overflow Weir of the Marvast Artificial Recharge Dam, the Mowgardi Dams in Bafgh, and the Review of the Artificial Dam Study in Kahan Valley, Taft
Introduction
The large artificial recharge projects of Sadeghabad, Marvast, Darreh Gahan, and Mowgardi in Yazd Province were constructed and put into operation in the past with the aim of recharging groundwater resources and creating storage reservoirs to mitigate floods. Due to floods and infrastructural incompatibilities, such as traditional qanat shafts and galleries, these systems have encountered challenges and problems. To address these issues, the Yazd Regional Water Company has initiated a project aimed at redesign, rehabilitation, and improvement of these dams. The main goals and outcomes of this project include:
- Hydraulic modeling to evaluate dam capacity and reservoir volume.
- Design of protective measures for qanat shafts located within dam reservoirs, and planning for the relocation or protection of associated galleries.
- Hydraulic verification and detailed design of the spillway capacities on the dams and lateral river spillways.
- Development of improved designs for intake walls of artificial recharge structures.
- Evaluation of scouring in the downstream reach of spillway stilling basins and development of remedial design measures.
- Evaluation of downstream scouring at the stilling basins of intake weirs and development of downstream remedial solutions.
- Design and rehabilitation of water intake structures and inlet openings.
- Rehabilitation and improvement of water conveyance canals from intake points to artificial recharge dams.
- Assessment of damaged and scoured areas on dam bodies and development of protective design measures.
- Assessment of issues in dam bottom outlets, valve chambers, and related structures; and development of remedial design solutions.
